The least expensive turf infill is silica sand derived from quartz eroded by water and wind. Silica sand is known to soak up moisture like pet urine thereby, developing bacteria and mold growth. When the sand granules have jagged edges, they wear down your artificial grass blades especially when your turf witnesses high foot traffic. In the absence of sufficient cushioning, silica sand infill is not recommended for artificial turfs that cater to a sport.
Porous zeolites form when ash and volcanic rocks react with groundwater. This infill neutralizes pet odors but, its lightweight makes it inappropriate as a primary infill. Instead, it is advisable to use a heavier sand or rubber infill on the base and top it with a secondary layer of zeolite infill. Since zeolite is porous, it keeps your artificial turf cooler even when exposed to direct sunlight.
